Satcom Forum 2018 (09-11 October 2018. Amsterdam)

The Satcom Forum

• WMO, together with the IOC of UNESCO are organizing the second meeting of the International Forum of Users of Satellite Data Telecommunication Systems (Satcom) in Hall 8, Amsterdam RAI, The Netherlands from 09-11 October 2018.
• This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 2018 WMO/CIMO Technical Conference on Meteorological and Environmental Instruments and Methods of Observation (CIMO TECO-2018), also planned in Amsterdam at the same venue around the same period.
• Both events are held at the kind invitation of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), at RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, from 8 to 11 October 2018, and will take place in conjunction with the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2018 (09-11 october 2018), which is being independently organized by UKIP Media and Events Ltd.
• Satcom2018 will coincide with the release of the Satcom Handbook soon to be published as an annex to our Guide on WMO Information Systems (WMO No 1061)

• Registration is via the online registration form
• Participants my also register to provide a 10 minute presentation or a poster by completing the online Presentation or Poster registration form
• By registering in Satcom, you will automatically be registered and receive a free pass to attend the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2018
• All participants already registered for CIMO Teco 2018 or the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2018 are welcome to participate in Satcom2018, however, for administrative purposes, it would be appreciated if you could still complete the online registration form

Mr	Nathan	Robinson	LEO Satellites -- Evolution of Space Economics	Satcom Provider	Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites represent a ground-shift in space communication technology. By design, LEO brings a dramatic and positive change to how organizations, both scientific and commercial, can implement and benefit from satellite communications. Specifically: 1) Faster design cycles — as Kepler demonstrated with the launch of their first LEO satellite in January of 2018, it is now possible to go from 'napkin to launch' in under 12 months. This means a greatly reduced cycle for new technology to be introduced and placed into orbit. 2) With lower orbits and a satellite weight that is a fraction of GEO satellites, launch costs are reduced. Similarly, the cost of the satellite itself is significantly lower. Both of these factors combine to allow services to be provided at a more cost-effective rate for end users of the technology. Mr	LySanias	Broyles	Multi-Agency Integration of Remote Sensed GOES DCS Telemetered Hydro-Meteorological Data	Satcom user	The GOES satellite program has provided its users with a cost effective and reliable method of relaying myriad hydro-meteorological observations transmitted by the over 20,000 platforms deployed. The transmitted information sensed by the installed instrumentation arrays is critical to water resource management, flood management, wildfire response, coastal and in-land navigation agriculture, water quality and other missions. The data relayed by the GOES East and West satellites is used for the protection of life, health, property and critical infrastructure; average of $90 billion in annual flood damages prevented (as much as $270 billion) in the United States alone and several billion dollars in revenue and benefits from commercial shipping, recreation, agriculture, land development and other benefits. Microcom's GOES Data Collection System (DCS) reception equipment is utilized at all major US receive sites, as well as numerous other sites throughout the Western Hemisphere. Microcom is currently undergoing a rebranding effort to better emphasis its transmitter and data logger products under the name of Microcom Environmental. Mr	Yann	Bernard	Argos system status & future	Satcom Provider	CLS, unique operator of Argos, presents the system status: 6 satellites with 63 ground antennae, offering a global coverage data collection & localisation service in near real-time. Together with the Doppler location service, from 7 to 240 Kb of data can be transmitted in 24h for a unique price per day. Argos Join Tariff Agreement (JTA) part of the Satcom Forum is offering a pricing structure attractive and budget predictable. METOP-C with an Argos-3 payload will be launched on 07/11/18. New generation of satellite instrument Argos-4 will be launched end 2019 by ISRO on OceanSat-3. The increased bandwidth of Argos-4 technology as well as the operational downlink will make it possible to send ever more data even more efficiently. In parallel, CLS and CNES are working to develop a new Argos constellation of 20 nanosatellites. Mr	Hub	Urlings	Welcome to the SmallSat Express	Satcom Provider	In the last quarter of 2018 a small sat express (the Indian PSLV and the American SpaceX Falcon-9 launchers) will bring a large number of small satellites into an sun synchronous orbit. After long delays more than 80 small satellites from more than 30 customers from around 20 countries, that are waiting anxiously to have their small satellites launched into orbit. On board of the small sat express one can find a full range of microsats and cubesats with as most interesting half a dozen IoT satellites built by a new generation of space start ups. The importance of the satellite express being succesful is high for this group of new space start ups. The new IoT satellites operators are at the forefront of the strong growing commercial small satellite sector and they are showing the way for the new space business.
