Support for Haiti Met Service under way

It has been one year since the earthquake, and even though much of the country still lies in rubble, some success was seen. WMO has issued a press release to summarize the efforts of last year and remind the public that a lot still needs to be done.

The new website issuing warnings and forecast during the hurricane season has been a great success. During the passage of Hurrican Tomas, the website was frequently visited and received very positve feedback. For more information, please click here.

Thanks to the help of WMO Members, the National Meteorological Centre of Haiti is able to provide forecasts and warnings for the upcoming hurricane season. With the support of Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, the new website www.meteo-haiti.gouv.ht could be launched. A WMO Mission was carried out 4-10 April 2010 to assess the immediate needs and organize the provision of meteorological equipment, internet connection and deployment of forecasters to assist the Haiti Met Service. Haiti Met Service was greatly affected during the earthquake and is now in need of basic materials to issue weather and flood warnings to the people and relief organizations over the next few months, as the rainy and hurricane season approaches.

Some donors have therefore committed themselves to providing general office equipment as well as basic communication systems. Also, some countries are supplying Haiti Met Service with the necessary data and measurements it needs to produce forecasts and provide crucial weather information and emergency warnings to the people.

On a longer time-scale, WMO is completing a project proposal for the reconstruction of the Haiti Met Service. Some donors have shown interest in helping to provide support such as new weather stations, necessary technical equipment and offer training for new staff to enable the Met Service to become fully functional. If you would like to support this project, please contact the Secretariat.
