The Learning Through Doing Project Implementation Summary
Madagascar: Under LTD pilot project, a Working Group on Weather, Climate and Health that was established by a Protocol of Partnership between the Madagascar Meteorological Service and the Ministry of Health (MoH) in 2008. The Working group has completed several activities including two workshops for staff of the Madagascar Meteorological Service and those of the MoH. These are: 1. Kick-off workshop for the “Learning through Doing Project: Public Weather Services and Health Sector” Antananarivo, Madagascar 14-16 October 2008; and 2.The Second National Training Workshop "Learning Through Doing Project: Cross-Training for the NMHS and MoH Staff in the Use of Meteorological, Climate and Health Data Antananarivo, Madagascar, 22-26 March 201.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) , the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) and the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar and investigates the relationship between weather and climate, and Malaria, Plague and Rift Valley Fever. The following events have been organized in connection with the LTD project in Madagascar.
Panama: The LTD pilot project which was initiated in 2008 focuses on enhanced service delivery to the health sector, in combating Dengue Fever. The project is implemented in partnership with the Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET).
Chile and Peru: The LTD projects have focused on enhanced agriculture, fisheries, health and transport sectors. The projects are in the process of improving methodologies and strengthening relationships with users through the creation of dedicated multidisciplinary teams. These projects are also being implemented in partnership with AEMET. The First Workshop on Learning through Doing Project wa sheald in Santiago, Chile 2-5 June 2008.
Ethiopia: The project is based on the integration of weather and climate data with health data to forecast and respond to outbreaks of malaria. This is a joint project between WMO, WHO and the Climate and Health working Group of Ethiopia of which the Ethiopia national meteorological service is a member. Funding for the project is provided by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria: The project is focused on investigating the impact of weather and climate on malaria and meningitis. Workshop of the Conference of West African Directors (Conference de Directeurs de l´Afrique Ouest - CDAO) and the Meningitis Environmental Risk Information Technologies (MERIT) Project Committee (CDAO-MERIT) on Capacity Building for the Establishment of Cooperation between NMHSs and the Health Sector.
