Wolfgang Kusch (62) studied meteorology at the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) from 1965 to 1973, when he began his post-graduate civil service training at the Deutscher Wetterdienst, the National Meteorological Service of the Federal Republic of Germany.

After stages in the Weather Forecasting department, and as head of the division ‘Basic Concepts of Synoptic Meteorology’, Mr Kusch was appointed Head of Business Unit ‘Media’ in 1995. In  1999 he took over responsibility for Business Area ‘Climate and Agriculture’ and also became a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the DWD. After June 2000, Mr Kusch was Head of the Business Areas ‘Weather Forecasting and Advisory Centre’ and ‘Climate and Environment’. In September 2004 he took over the duties as Vice President, and at the end of 2005, was appointed President of the DWD.

Wolfgang Kusch also represents the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany and the DWD in international meteorological committees, and heads the German delegation at ECMWF and EUMETSAT council meetings. He is Permanent Representative of Germany with WMO, and since 1 July 2005, Member of the WMO Executive Council.
