Workshop on Sustaining National Meteorological Services – Strengthening WMO Regional and Global Centres

Washington DC, USA, 18-20 June 2013

The World Meteorological Organization, the World Bank and U.S. National Weather Service are organizing a workshop in Washington 18-20 June aimed at strengthening capacity in National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in developing and least developed countries to deliver improved forecasts and warnings of severe weather to save lives, livelihoods and property.

The workshop is intended to foster support and investment in the cascading process exemplified by WMO’s Severe Weather Forecasting Demonstration Project, which shares forecasting products and expertise of top-level global centres with regional operational centres responsible for providing forecast guidance to national services.

The SWFDP has made a significant contribution to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development in countries where it is being implemented.  Further progress will depend on strengthening/sustaining WMO’s operational centres, especially Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres and Regional Climate Centres and their links to both global and respective national centres. This is vital to increase the capacity of NMHSs to deliver effective weather, climate and hydrological forecasting and warning services.
