The Government of Senegal and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) organized a 2018 African Conference on Meteorology for Aviation (ACMA-2018). The Conference was held at the Rhino Resort Hotel in Saly Portudal (near Dakar), Senegal from 28 to 30 November 2018.
The Conference was organized in collaboration with l'Agence nationale de l'aviation civile et de la meteorologie (ANACIM) of Senegal and in close coordination with l'Agence pour la Securite de la Navigation Aerienne en Afrique et a Madagascar (ASECNA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other relevant stakeholders.
Resolution 2 of the sixteenth session of WMO Regional Association I (RA I-16, Africa) held in Praia, Caba Verde in February 2015 called on the organizing of a regional conference on the future of meteorological service provision to civil aviation in order to explore coordinated regional approaches in RA I. This is in response to the evolving air traffic management system and information-centric requirements, based on the outcomes of the Conjoint ICAO/WMO Meteorology Divisional Meeting held in 2014.
The Conference provided a forum to discuss and share national and sub-regional experiences on aeronautical meteorology matters which are among the priorities of RA I and to build a common understanding of the challenges and opportunities as well as the priorities and risks emanating from global and regional developments, including those associated with the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP) and its Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU) methodology. In addition, the Conference will consider emerging issues such as the impacts of climate change on aviation, as part of the climate-related challenges for RA I Members. A broad participation of the aviation stakeholders and users of aeronautical meteorological information is envisaged in order to outline the "African aviation landscape" and understand better the current and emerging user needs.
The outcomes of the Conference were reported to the RA I-17 session held in Cairo, Eygpt from 21 to 23 February 2019.
