RA VI (Europe) Workshop
on the WIGOS Implementation Plan

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is organizing, in collaboration with the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET), and at the kind invitation of the Government of Spain, a WMO RA VI (Europe) WIGOS Workshop. The workshop will be held at the AEMET premises in Madrid from 6 to 8 May 2013.

The Workshop is organized in line with the directives given by the WMO Sixteenth Congress (Geneva, May-June 2011) for the implementing the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) during the current financial period. In particular, Congress, in its Resolution 50 (Cg-XVI) requested the regional associations:

• To develop their regional WIGOS implementation plans;
• To coordinate WIGOS implementation activities with the WMO Information System in their operating plans and work programmes;
• To promote capacity-building and outreach activities to assist Members in the implementation of WIGOS.

Noting the directives given by Congress, the RA VI Management Group assigned highest priority to the implementation of the WIGOS in Region VI (Europe). In this regard, the main objective of the Workshop is to foster the WIGOS implementation by RA VI Members and contribute to the development of a coordinated regional WIGOS implementation plan. The workshop will address:

• Current observing systems in RA VI and their readiness for the WIGOS implementation;
• Existing guidance and priorities relevant to the WMO component observing systems in RA VI;
• Alignment of Regional WIGOS Implementation Plan with national activities and relevant aid-funded projects;
• Key areas for WIGOS implementation.

The ICG-WIGOS-2 agreed on a "Self assessment checklist" to assist Members in a national self-assessment of their readiness for WIGOS implementation. EC-65 will request all Members to perform this assessment and provide the WIGOS Project Office with the outcome to be used for the WIGOS Capacity Development planning. Even if the EC-65 will be held after RA VI WIGOS Workshop, the participants in the Workshop are kindly requested to complete the Self assessment checklist and return to the WMO Secretariat (izahumensky@wmo.int) early before the Workshop, preferably by 22 April 2013, to allow Secretariat to analyze the inputs.
