Role of the WMO Secretariat in a nuclear accident

The WMO Secretariat  operates an Office for Emergency Response to Nuclear Accidents (ERNA).  It has online  dedicated resources for Internet, Fax and Voice  communication and is monitored by a staff member during office hours.

The responsibilities of the WMO ERNA Office include:

  • Receiving and authenticating/verifying incoming messages, relaying information to Geneva- based UN organizations (subject to bilateral arrangements)
  • Providing relevant information to WMO Members' NMHSs on request and making available information provided by the Accident State or other sources to dedicated WMO specialised centres of the GDPS
  • Participating in test exercises
