HOMS COMPONENT

MANUAL FOR WATER GAUGING AND DISCHARGE MEASUREMENT

1.   Purpose and objectives

     Comprehensive instructions for Hydrological Services and rules for  water level gauging and discharge measurement according to German  hydrological practice.

2.   Description

     The manual comprises the following topics:

     a) construction of gauges, description of instruments for the measurement of water levels;

     b) routines for planning, operation, observation and maintenance of gauges;

     c) methods for the determination of discharge (e.g. by current meters, floats, tracers) and
        establishment of sound relationships between water levels and discharges (see HOMS
        component E70.3.01);

     d) specific procedures for the determination of discharges in tidal rivers under the influence of ebb
        and flood tides.

     Although not to be thought of as a textbook, this manual provides detailed information essential for Hydrological Services, including numerous forms, specimens and checklists for practical applications.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     Component can be used by trained technical personnel.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual in English, 258 pp, numerous tables and figures, checklists and special forms to be filled in. Courses on special topics of the manual may be arranged by the German HNRC on request.

7.   Operational experience

     Component is used routinely by the Operational Hydrological Services of the German States (Länder) and has been regularly updated to take into account new technical trends.
