SOFTWARE Q: AN EFFICIENT PROGRAMME FOR THE ACQUISITION, EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT OF RIVER DISCHARGE DATA

1.   Purpose and objectives

     Software Q is a program for the acquisition, evaluation and management of discharge easurements, which are made by using propeller current meters or point-velocity-sensors. Software Q offers a variety of graphic representations and includes the calculation of both a discharge-rating
curve and discharge-rating table.

2.   Description

     Software Q runs under the operating systems WINDOWS 3.11, WINDOWS 95/98 and WINDOWS NT. It stores and manages the data in a relational database system. The algorithms follow the German "Guideline for Water Level and Discharge Measurement". Special features are:

     - Evaluation of data measured during changing water stages is possible;
     - In measurements with propeller meters, the number of registered impulses is the input for each       point. The computer then immediately displays the associated flow velocity. In measurements       using a point-velocity-sensor (e.g. magnetic-inductive probe) the flow velocity can be entered
      directly;
     - An efficient management of measuring instruments is done by the differentiation of:
       * Propeller, cable-suspended
       * Sensor, cable-suspended
       * Propeller, rod-mounted
       * Sensor, rod-mounted;
     - The programme can propose locations for the measuring points. This feature is especially useful        when the data are fed directly into a laptop computer in the field;
     - After the input of the data for one vertical, a velocity distribution profile can be drawn immediately       making it easy to identify possible errors;
     - Before the evaluation of a measurement begins, the data are formally  checked for completeness.        The results of the evaluation are displayed either as a graph or as a listing. If needed,       postprocessing of the measured data is possible. Verticals can be erased, modified, or new ones       can be added;
    - Data input can be interrupted at any time and can be resumed at a later moment at the same       position;
    - An automatic measurement recording using propeller-type meters is possible;
    - The program contains the consideration of an oblique cross-section;
    - There are two interpolation methods to enable the best fit for flow velocity distributions;
    - The user will be supported by a fast and informative online help;
    - All printable results (graphs and lists) are displayed in a preview window before being printed;
    - Languages available: German, English, Italian, Spanish, and French.

3.   Input

     Measuring site; measuring device and measuring method. The program can  evaluate: one-point, two-point, and multi-point measurements, integrated measurements and combined measurements. At least three genuine measuring verticals must be used. This means together with the two banks a total of  five verticals.

4.   Output

     Recording of the measurement; results of the calculation; velocity distribution curve (total view and selected details); cross-section; isotach diagram; results displayed in a discharge rating curve; lists of
gauging stations, measurement and meters; discharge rating curve and discharge rating table. All results (i.e. graphs and lists) are available - displayed on screen or printed.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     Operational System: WINDOWS 3.11, WINDOWS 95/98 or WINDOWS NT. Personal Computer with the following minimal configuration: 486-processor, 8 MB memory, 15" screen, resolution 600x480.
Recommended configuration: Pentium-processor, 16 Mb memory, 17" screen, resolution 1024x768.

6.   Form of presentation

     Program on diskette, CD-ROM, handbook and storyboard.

7.   Operational experience
