This page provides information about testing of the second release candidate of this and associated models and their XML schema.

How to comment on AvXML 1.0 RC2

Please refer to the separate wiki page on how to submit a comment on AvXML 1.0 RC2.

Structure of AvXML

AvXML is built on several packages:

Packages managed by WMO

  • METCE - a set of foundation building blocks to support application schema in the domains of interest to WMO, notably the weather, climate, hydrology, oceanography and space weather disciplines
  • Observable Property Model (OPM) - based on work by the OGC Sensor Working Group, this allows creation of definitions that are derived from the meteorological basic types.

Packages managed by ICAO

  • IWXXM - ICAO Meteorological Information Exchange Model - defines the reports required by ICAO (the equivalent of METAR/SPECI, TAF and SIGMET) that are built from the components of the packages managed by WMO
  • SAF - Simple Aeronautical Features, that allow items such as airports, or runways to be described to the level of detail required for reporting aviation weather

More details of these packages are available on a separate wiki page.

Registry to support AvXML

This release introduces a web accessible registry which contain information about the supplemental resource required to publish data products in the AvXML format. The WMO Codes Registry is set to be deployed at http://codes.wmo.int. However, at the time of publishing AvXML 1.0 Release Candidate 2 only a BETA deployment is available at http://test.wmocodes.info.

The BETA deployment of WMO Codes Registry is sparsely populated - more information will continue to be added throughout the Release Candidate 2 review period. Also, please note that the URIs for terms published at http://test.wmocodes.info will not be maintained once the WMO Codes Registry is operational deployed to its permanent location http://codes.wmo.int.

When assessing AvXML 1.0 Release Candidate 2, any resources with HTTP URIs that refer to the http://codes.wmo.int sub-domain may not resolve. In such a case, please amend the resource URI such that the http://test.wmocodes.info subdomain is used. For example: if reviewing the term "Slush" from BUFR Code-table 0 20 086 "Runway deposits", the URI http://codes.wmo.int/bufr4/codeflag/0-20-086/6 should be amended to http://test.wmocodes.info/bufr4/codeflag/0-20-086/6.

Feedback on the WMO Codes Registry is welcome. More information regarding the implementation and behaviour of the WMO Codes Registry can be found at the github wiki for the registry software implementation project.

Further information about the WMO Codes Registry can be found on a separate page.
