Metadata describing documents

Purpose of this section of the metadata guide

Many types of document need to be described by WIS Discovery Metadata records. This page outlines the key aspects to consider when preparing those records.

Types of record for which examples are provided

WMO Manual

The example in this Guide is the WIS Discovery metadata record for the Manual on Codes.

You can use the table of contents at the top of this page to navigate to the sub-pages.

What to include in the metadata record

A key decision is on whether the organization needs to publish a single metadata record that corresponds to the current version of the published document (for a Manual this would be the most recently approved version, and for a journal series it might refer to the whole series), or whether a separate metadata record is needed for each version or issue (for example, so that users are able to find the version of the Manual in force at the time an observation was made).
