City Orientation for WMO visitors

Place de Cornavin and Geneva's train station "Cornavin". Conveniently located at a 10-15 min. walking distance to WMO, to the "Nations" square or to "Jardin Botanique". The area around Place de Cornavin is commercial, very central, with access to all means of transport going in all directions. You can find, the main Post Office, that hosts Tourist Office; the pedestrian street; lots of restaurants, shops, cinemas and currency exchange places.  It is also a short walk to the lake, the Mont-Blanc bridge; and not far from the university, Geneva's historic old town, theatres, museums and the fancy boutiques on Rue de la Confédération.

Sécheron train stop.  A CFF train stop was inaugurated on 12 Dec. 2004, next door to WMO! The ride from Cornavin station takes exactly 3 minutes. It leaves Cornavin in the direction of "Coppet" every 30 minutes - usually from platforms 1 or 2. The times, on workdays until the evening are: 7h03, 7h33, 8h03, 8h33, 9h03, 9h33, etc.

Nations. As in United Nations, is one of Geneva's transport hubs. The large square features a view to the Palais des Nations and its rows of colourful flags from all its Members. Several UN organizations are located nearby, with WMO at a 4-min. walk towards the lake.

Jardin Botanique. The Botanical Gardens are located right across the street from WMO.

Getting around Geneva
Geneva is a very compact city served by an excellent bus system. Information is available at the airport or at the TPG office located in Geneva's main train station. Please note, within Geneva, Bus drivers do not sell nor control the bus tickets; instead, a brigade of inspectors do make spot checks. Failure to produce a valid ticket results in a fine of at least CHF 100.00. If unable to pay the fine on the spot, your id documents are requested. Failure to show the id results in a visit to the police station.

Bus Tickets are sold at self-service distributors located at nearly every bus stop. Payment is made in EXACT change ONLY, in swiss francs or euro coins. One ticket may be used on any bus or tram line and in any direction, within the limits of the time duration (stamped on the ticket) and of the zones selected.

There is a varied choice of transport tickets covering from one to several travelling zones.
Also, day and weekend passes.
Bus pre-paid cards called "CarteBonus" are sold at newspaper kiosks for 20, 30 or 50 CHF.

For those who choose a hotel in Ferney-Voltaire (France), you will use Bus F, between the various bus-stops in Ferney and the 'Nations' stop in Geneva (ride takes approx. 30 min.). 'Nations' bus stop is at a 4-minute walk to WMO.

from the airport "COINTRIN" to town. Geneva's airport is less than 5 km from downtown. There is direct transport to both WMO (Jardin Botanique) and Cornavin station.
>> BY BUS.  Bus 10 passes through Cornavin station.  Bus 28 arrives at WMO "Jardin Botanique". More info at:  www.tpg.ch.
>> BY TRAIN. All day, all trains leaving the airport stop at Cornavin main station before carrying on with their journey. Look for the "Gare CFF" or "Cornavin" signs.  Ticket costs in the range of CHF 10.00 and are  sold at the "billeterie", at self-service distributors and sometimes by the train controller. >> BY TAXI. A taxi ride from the Airport in the direction of WMO, Jardin Botanique, Nations or Cornavin station cost in the range of CHF40.00.
