CBS Conference on Data Processing and Forecasting Systems
(Submitted by A. Simard)
Summary and purpose of document
This document provides some proposals on the programme for the Technical Conference on Data Processing and Forecasting Systems to be held in conjunction with CBS-Ext.(02).
CBS TECHNICAL CONFERENCE ON DATA PROCESSING AND FORECASTING SYSTEMS
The conference will be held during the preceding two days of the next CBS session to be held in Canberra, Australia in December 2002. The chair of the OPAG did a small survey with ICT members ( which includes representatives form RA , chair of ET and rapporteurs) to get some ideas for the conference. The favoured approach is to have one day devoted to the severe weather forecasts and the second day devoted to ensemble forecasting.
Suggestions have been made with examples of topics to be addressed as follows
The sessions of the 1st day could be:
Severe weather forecasts
integrated systems of nowcasting and very short-range forecasts (0 - 12 h.); among them the experience of SYDNEY 2000 forecast demonstration project could be presented there.
tropical cyclone forecasts (forecasting wind and precipitation);
forecasting the precipitation patterns and flooding caused by them (good experience is MAP project - Mesoscale Alpine Programme):
etc.
On the second day:
Ensemble forecasting
methodology of ensemble forecasting (short- medium- and long-range);
monthly and seasonal hydrodynamic-statistical weather forecasts.
4D data assimilation systems, impact of new observations data on the quality of numerical analysis and forecasts, role of the 4Dvar data assimilation systems in ensemble forecasting
etc.
A more concrete proposal will be made by the chair of the OPAG at the meeting.
