STUDY GUIDE FOR BEGINNING COURSE IN GROUNDWATER HYDROLOGY

1.   Purpose and objectives

This course provides an introduction and overview of groundwater hydrology for beginning geologists and hydrologists.

2.   Description

The course consists of five major sections:

     (1) Fundamental concepts and definitions,
     (2) Principles of groundwater flow and storage,
     (3) Description and analysis of groundwater systems,
     (4) Groundwater flow to wells, and
     (5) Groundwater contamination.

It is based on U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Open-File Report 90-183, "Study Guide for a Beginning Course in Groundwater Hydrology: Part I - Course Participants" by O.L. Franke, T.E. Reilly, R.J. Haefner, and D.L. Simmons, and Open-File Report 92-637, "Study Guide for a Beginning Course
in Groundwater Hydrology: Part II - Instructor's Guide" by the same authors. The course consists of (1) readings in the study guide, (2) assigned readings from Fetter (1988), Freeze and Cherry (1979), and
Todd (1980), and (3) homework exercises.

The course may be given either as an intensive 1-week workshop or as a self-paced study program.

3.   Input

     Not applicable.

4.   Output

     Not applicable.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

Students are assumed to have had an introduction to geology and hydrology.

6.   Form of presentation

Two reports in English are provided: USGS Open-File Reports 90-183 and 92-637, see references.

7.   Operational experience

The study guide has been used to conduct courses within and outside the U.S. Geological Survey.

8.   Originator and technical support

U.S. Geological Survey, Office of Ground Water.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for the United States.

10.  Condition of use

The study guide is available at cost of reproduction and mailing.
