INTERIOR FLOOD HYDROLOGY (HEC-IFH)

1.   Purpose and objectives

The program performs the analyses needed to characterise interior-area (e.g. areas behind levees) flood hazards and to evaluate the performance of the potential flood reduction measures and plans.

2.   Description

The program can be used to analyse flood damage reduction measures for leveed interior areas. Projects such as levees and floodwalls can cause problems by isolating interior areas and blocking drainage to the main river. Hydrologic analyses are needed to characterise the interior area flood hazard and to evaluate the performance of the potential flood damage reduction measures and plans. The HEC-IFH program addresses this need. The program is particularly powerful for performing long, historical period simulations and makes extensive use of a menu-driven user interface, statistical and graphical data representations, and data summaries. The program interfaces with the HEC-DSS Data Storage System for input and output data storage. Annual or partial-duration series of interior elevation-frequency relationships can be derived (directly using either hypothetical events or continuous simulation) for alternative configurations of interior features such as gravity outlets, pumps, and
diversions.

3.   Input

Data entry is performed using separate data entry modules. Each module represents a group of related data. Data entry screens and computational procedures are provided to develop the data for each module. Any entered, imported, or computed data can be tabulated or plotted while within these
modules. Separate data entry modules are provided for precipitation, runoff, ponding areas, gravity outlets, pumps, exterior stages, and auxiliary flow.

4.   Output

Twenty-three different hydrologic analysis reports are available for displaying and plotting the simulation results. Variables that can be displayed include precipitation, infiltration, runoff, pond inflow,
outflow, elevation-frequency and duration, gravity outflow, seepage, and pump outflow, operation time, and energy used. Six categories of reports are provided. Also, four types of plan comparison reports are available.
The reports include plan summary data and frequency relationships for maximum interior elevation, area flooded, and pond inflow.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

The program requires an 80386 or better PC. It is written in FORTRAN.

6.   Form of presentation

The program comes on two 1.44 MB diskettes. Support documentation consists of a Users Manual (January 1999) and technical papers.

7.   Operational experience

Moderate; both private and public organizations.

8.   Originator and technical support

The Hydrologic Engineering Center, HEC, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,  www.hec.usace.army.mil

9.   Availability

Request from the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10.  Conditions on use

Documentation is available for a distribution-handling fee of $120.00 for the 1st program and $60.00 for each additional program on same request.

The handling fee is waived for U.S. Government agencies. (Checks or money orders should be made payable to "Treasurer of the United States", in U.S. currency.)
