NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE NON-LINEAR MUSKINGUM METHOD

1.   Purpose and objectives

Flood routing by the Muskingum method. This component takes into account the change of velocity due to discharge, and the method is reformulated as a non-linear problem which is solved using a computer program.

2.   Description

The inflow hydrograph is known and the outflow discharge is to be obtained. Four parameters are introduced to define how the values of  Muskingum's K and x are related to discharge. All these parameters can be determined from the hydraulic properties of the channel.

3.   Input

Inflow and outflow hydrographs of the channel.

4.   Output

Numerical table of the inflow and outflow hydrographs. Plot of computed and measured hydrographs of outflow.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

The user should be familiar with the basic theory of the method.

6.   Form of presentation

Manual in English, printed listing of program and floppy diskette.

7.   Operational experience

It has been applied successfully in different river reaches in China.

8.   Originator and technical support

Zhao Ren-jun and Wang Pei-len, Hohai University, Nanjing, China

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for China.

10.  Conditions on use

     Cost of reproduction and mailing.
