RUNOFF CALCULATION BY THE STORAGE FUNCTION METHOD

 

1.   Purpose and objectives

     A simple model for flood runoff.

2.   Description

     Runoff is simply expressed by the following storage function:

     S = Kqp
     fr - q = dS/dt

     S:  storage of rainfall
     q:  rate of discharge
     r:  rainfall

     Parameters K, p and f can be estimated from the observed data.

3.   Input

     Hydrograph of rainfall.

4.   Output

     Hydrograph of discharge.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     The model can also be used for river channels.

6.   Form of presentation

     Publication in Japanese is for sale. A photocopy of a text in English is also available.

7.   Operational experience

     Used successfully since 1961 in all parts of Japan and East Asia.
