HYDROLOGIC AND HYDRAULIC PROCEDURES FOR FLOOD PLAIN DELINEATION

 

1.   Purpose and objectives

     Outlines the basic hydrologic and hydraulic investigations required for flood risk mapping.

2.   Description

     Discusses floods based on probability; floods from snowmelt and precipitation; large recorded floods; streamflow records; historical floods; stage-discharge relationships; hydraulic coefficients; elevations of high water marks; aerial photographs of large floods; river cross-sections; streamflow regulation; meteorologic and physiographic data; lake and sea levels; flood frequency analysis; runoff from a specified input; and, hydraulic analysis to convert flood flow to a water surface profile.

     Information on floods as described above.

4.   Output

     Flood risk maps.

     Not applicable.

     Manual, in English.

7.   Operational experience

     Used as a guide in the production of flood risk maps under the Flood Damage Reduction Program in Canada.
