METHODS FOR COMPUTING DESIGN FLOODS

1.   Purpose and objectives

Estimation of design floods from rainfall data.

2.   Description

Uses rainfall data, or mapped statistics of the annual maximum rainfalls to estimate design floods for water resources projects. This component is complementary to K15.1.01.

3.   Input

Point storm rainfall data, or isoline maps of annual maximum rainfall statistics, model parameters.

4.   Output

     Design flood hydrograph.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

At least 20 years annual maximum rainfall data or alternatively maps of storm rainfall statistical parameters. Simultaneous rainfall and flow records for five or more storms and floods to determine rainfall-runoff model.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual describing the technique.

7.   Operational experience

Has been adopted for the "Standard for computing design floods for hydraulic structures", Ministry of Water Conservancy and Ministry of  Electric Power, China. See particularly appendices III, V and VI.

8.   Originator and technical support

Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Research.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for China.

10.  Conditions on use

     Cost of reproduction and mailing.
