REGIONAL ANALYSES OF STREAMFLOW CHARACTERISTICS

1.   Purpose and objectives

To describe ways of developing regional relations between streamflow and basin characteristics. Such relations can be used to estimate streamflow characteristics at sites where there are no streamflow records.

2.   Description

The manual describes various ways of generalizing streamflow characteristics and evaluates the applicability and reliability of each under various hydrological conditions. Several alternatives to
regionalization are briefly described.

3.   Input

Streamflow characteristics defined at gauging stations and the corresponding basin characteristics such as drainage area, topographic characteristics, and climatic characteristics.

4.   Output

Equations relating various streamflow characteristics to basin characteristics, and some measure of their standard errors.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

The region studied should be reasonably homogeneous hydrologically and it should contain streamflow records from sites representing all parts of the region and having a wide range of the applicable basin characteristics. Results are most reliable in humid regions.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual in English.

7.   Operational experience

     Extensive in the US.

8.   Originator and technical support

     U.S. Geological Survey.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10.  Conditions on use

     None.
