DISCHARGE RATINGS AT GAUGING STATIONS

1.   Purpose and objectives

A discharge rating is used to compute a discharge record from a record of water level at a gauging station.

2.   Description

This manual describes the procedures commonly used to develop simple ratings where discharge is related only to stage, and the most frequently encountered types of complex ratings where additional factors such as rate of change of stage, water-surface slope, or index velocity are used.
Techniques of logarithmic plotting and applications of simple storage routing to rating development are demonstrated. Computer applications are included.

3.   Input

Stage record and discharge measurements throughout much of the range of stage.

4.   Output

The discharge rating for the site and the period of time considered.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

Reliability of a stage-discharge relation (rating) depends on the channel characteristics and on channel stability.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual in English.

7.   Operational experience

     Extensive.

8.   Originator and technical support

     U.S. Geological Survey.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10.  Conditions on use

     None.
