COMPUTATION OF FLUVIAL SEDIMENT DISCHARGE

1.   Purpose and objectives

The purpose is to combine into a single handbook the necessary information to evaluate sediment data, compute sediment discharge, and tabulate the discharges for publication.

2.   Description

This report includes procedures and forms used to compile and evaluate particle-size and concentration data, to compute fluvial sediment discharge, and to prepare sediment records for publication.

3.   Input

Water samples, water discharge data, and related field information.

4.   Output

Daily or periodic sediment records. Daily records include daily mean concentration, suspended-sediment discharge, and periodic determination of particle-size distribution of suspended sediment and bed material.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

The entire operation, from collection of the sample in the field to the laboratory analysis and the computation of the records, requires a high degree of co-ordination.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual in English.

7.   Operational experience

     Extensive.

8.   Originator and technical support

     U.S. Geological Survey.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10.  Conditions on use

     None.
