WATER QUALITY DATABASE (HYQUAL)

1.   Purpose and objectives

To assist in managing the storage and analysis of water quality data. For use wherever storage of sample data of water for ingestion, hygiene, agricultural, industrial or recreational purposes is required.

2.   Description

HYQUAL is a water quality database running under Microsoft Windows using standard Windows user-interface methods. It can be used to organize and present water quality data in a manner that is easily assimilated by non-technical managers. The database provides a stimulus for collecting
data in a systematic manner, thereby providing the basis for a better understanding of water quality problems. Data verification and quality monitoring are facilitated by tables and graphs which can be used as input to modelling studies.

HYQUAL data are stored in a hierarchical manner allowing sample points to be grouped into clusters that may be defined by any convenient method; for example, by using descriptions of geographical features such as river reaches, sewage treatment works or reservoirs. Groups of clusters
are assigned to user-defined geographic regions for added convenience. A password system is used to control the level of user access.

HYQUAL graphs include time series, scatter plots, bar graphs and multi-site plots.  The Windows environment permits several tables and graphs to be displayed simultaneously, so that comparison of data for different sites or time periods can be made quickly and easily.

3.   Input

Data are entered and edited through standard Windows text entry boxes. Data can be imported in ASCII format to allow data exchange with other software.

4.   Output

HYQUAL output can be sent to any device supported by the Windows environment. Tables and graphs can be cut and pasted into other Windows programs via the clipboard. Data can be exported in ASCII format to allow data exchange with other software.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

HYQUAL runs under Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or 3.1.

6.   Form of presentation

One 3.5" disc with executable programs and a manual.

7.   Operational experience

The data base has already been used with success in tropical areas (Papua New Guinea) as well as in Europe.

8.   Originator and technical support

Software Sales & Support Section, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, formerly the Institute of Hydrology, Wallingford.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for the United Kingdom.

10.  Conditions on use

Specifications free of charge. The software is for sale, details from the supplier.
