CORRECTION OF OBSERVED DEPTH FOR ANGLE OF SOUNDING LINE

1.   Purpose and objectives

A method of determining water depth and depth of gauging point from the measured angle of the sounding line when stream gauging from a boat or cableway.

2.   Description

The method is based on an analysis of the vertical velocity distribution and the characteristics of the sounding line and instrument. Results are presented in tables.

3.   Input

The deviation angle measured while gauging and instrument and cable characteristics.

4.   Output

The tables give correction for air line, water line, depth of gauging point and displacement of the cable.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

The tables may be used for angles up to 40 degrees.

6.   Form of presentation

Tables of the corrections to be applied.

7.   Operational experience

The computed correction values have been checked by measurement at angles up to 60 degrees. The tables have been used successfully since 1959 for boat measurements and since 1977 for cableway measurements.

8.   Originator and technical support

Hydrometric centre, Yangtze Valley Planning Office, Henkou, China.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for China.

10.  Conditions on use

     Cost of reproduction and mailing.
