MEASUREMENT OF PEAK DISCHARGE AT CULVERTS BY INDIRECT METHODS

1.   Purpose and objectives

To compute peak discharge through a culvert from high-water marks above and below the culvert.

2.   Description

The manual classifies culvert flow into six types, gives discharge equations based on continuity and energy equations, and describes procedures for measuring peak discharges using culverts. Discharge
coefficients for a variety of geometries and flow types are given. Ten examples detail step-by-step computation procedures.

3.   Input

A survey of culvert and channel geometry and of floodmarks.

4.   Output

     Peak discharge of the flood.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

Best results will be obtained when applied by a person experienced in the method to a suitable culvert.

6.   Form of presentation

     Manual in English.

7.   Operational experience

     Extensive.

8.   Originator and technical support

     U.S. Geological Survey.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10.  Conditions on use

     None.
