MEASUREMENT OF PEAK DISCHARGE BY THE SLOPE-AREA METHOD |
||
1. Purpose and objectives This manual describes the application of the Manning equation to
compute peak discharge in open channels. 2. Description Field and office procedures required for this method are described,
selection of reaches is detailed, discharge equations are given, and a
complete example of computation of a slope-area measurement is also given. 3. Input A reach of stream with high-water marks from a recent flood. 4. Output The computed peak discharge. 5. Operational requirements and restrictions Best results will be obtained when applied by a person experienced in
the method on a suitable reach with good high-water marks. 6. Form of presentation Handbook in English. 7. Operational experience Used in U.S. for many years. 8. Originator and technical support U.S. Geological Survey. From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA. 10. Conditions on use None.
