FLUVIAL SEDIMENT CONCEPTS

 

1.   Purpose and objectives

     To provide some knowledge of fluvial sedimentation and its implications in order that the hydrologist can better understand why sediment data are needed and where to make what kind of measurements.

2.   Description

     Concepts presented in this report involve:

     a. The physical characteristics of sediment which include aspects relative to weathering, soils,          resistance to erosion, and particle size.

     b. Sediment erosion, transport, and deposition characteristics.

     c. Geomorphological considerations which include aspects relative to the drainage basin, mass                wasting, and channel properties.

     d. Economic aspects.

     e. Data needs and program objectives.
