FIELD METHODS FOR MEASUREMENTS OF FLUVIAL SEDIMENT

1. Purpose and objectives

To describe field methods of collecting water samples for the determination of fluvial sediment and bedload discharge.

2. Description

The introduction describes sediment characteristics, source and transport, and needs for sediment data. The principal sections are on sediment-sampling equipment and sediment-sampling techniques.

3. Input

 A river carrying sediment.

4. Output

Water and bedload samples and water-discharge data for use in computing fluvial sediment transport.

5. Operational requirements and restrictions

The collection of reliable sediment data requires a high degree of co-ordination of all activities ranging from field data collection to laboratory analysis to computation of fluvial sediment transport over time.

6. Form of presentation

  Manual in English.

7. Operational experience

 Extensive.

8. Originator and technical support

 U.S. Geological Survey.

9. Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for USA.

10. Conditions on use

 None.
