PORTABLE RIVER GAUGING WINCH

 

1.   Purpose and objectives

     The winch is designed to operate current meters or suspended sediment samplers weighing up to 25 kg from a bridge.

2.   Description

     The winch is made of aluminium alloy. The cable drum has a circumference of approximately 292mm, and holds the 2.5mm-diameter suspension-conduction cable. The depth of the current meter or the suspended sediment sampler is read from a four-digit counter, which indicates metres and centimetres and has a reset button. The winch is securely mounted on an A-frame that is a
manually operated gauging crane to facilitate river gauging operation from bridges.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     The winch can support a maximum load of 50 kg and has a breaking strain of up to 150 kg. It is designed for use from a bridge.

     Technical drawings for local manufacture are available.

7.   Operational experience

     The winch has been used as a standard instrument to operate current meters or suspended sediment samplers from bridges by the Drainage and Irrigation Department, Malaysia.

     Technical drawings available free of charge. Purchase of the instrument from the local manufacturer in Malaysia can be arranged.
