OVERHEAD FLOAT THROWER

1.   Purpose and objectives

     An installation for dropping floats to measure surface velocity of fast flowing rivers during floods when a current meter may not be used.

2.   Description

     A hydrometric cable way is used to support the float dropper which can hold from 10 to 15 floats. The floats can be dropped singly by turning a handle.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     Can be used for rivers up to 500 m wide with surface velocities over 5 m/s.

     The design drawings.

7.   Operational experience

     Has been used successfully since 1964 at many of the hydrometric stations of Hepei province, China.
