LASER SNOW DEPTH GAUGE

 

1.   Purpose and objectives

     To measure snow depth automatically.

2.   Description

     The gauge uses a laser method to measure snow depth and is equipped with a communication function (RS-232C) allowing it to be used in snow information networks in a wide variety of sites. In addition, a modem for use with telephone wires can be installed.

3.   Input

     Actual snow depth up to 5m.

4.   Output

     The snow depth with a resolution of 2cm as a digital signal (RS-232C) or an analog signal 0V-1V DC.

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

     When selecting a location for measurements, select a place where the snow level will not be affected by the topography, one unsusceptible to snow drifts, and if possible, a level and open area.

6.   Form of presentation

     A catalogue and instrument specifications are available.

7.   Operational experience

     About 50 sets were installed in Japan in 1999.
