ABSTRACT:

For the past few years the observations from Ocean Buoys deployed over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal under National Data Buoy Programme of DOD have been found very useful. Whether it be for monitoring of tropical cyclones or in day to day weather forecasting during monsoon period.

During the pre-monsoon season of 2004, two cyclonic storms formed in the North Indian Ocean – a severe cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea during May 1 – 10 and a very severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal during May 16 – 19. The usefulness of meteorological data particularly of wind speed / direction and pressure from these buoys during these cyclonic storms has been analyzed. The data reported by the buoys has been ground tested to generally match very well with the analyzed wind and pressure fields. The result of day to day analysis during the period of the above stated cyclonic storms are presented.
The data inputs from the buoys have been found useful in fixing the location of cyclonic storms and predicting their track.
