ABSTRACT:

Argo data has been applied to the global ocean data assimilation system of the Beijing Climate Center of China (BCC-GODAS), which contains 3 main sub-systems - data pre-processing, 3-D variational interpolating and an ocean dynamic model. To enable the use of Argo data, some adjustment and improvement has been made in the corresponding parts in the different sub-systems.

Using the observation data from 1981 to 2003 which contain Argo data from 2001 to 2003 Jul., we have performed a series of numerical experiments on this system. Comparing the corresponding results of NCEP, it is illustrated that using Argo data can improve the results of BCC-GODAS in the region of the tropical Pacific, for example SST, SSTA, Nino index, sub-surface temperature, etc. Furthermore, it is shown that BCC-GODAS benefits from Argo data in the regions much wider than the area of the tropical Pacific, such as the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and extra-tropical Pacific Ocean.
