SVP-Barometer Drifter Performance – Product Performance and Developments
Jeff Wigenroth, (Technocean)

ABSTRACT:

Technocean has been an active participant in the development and manufacture of the WOCE-SVP buoy since its introduction in the early 1980’s. The company was also involved in enhancing the SVP barometer sensor during the early 1990’s (the SVP-B buoy). The goal was to provide an inexpensive yet reliable source of high-quality sea-level air pressure data for a relatively long period – one year or more - while operating in the hostile ocean environment. Early efforts involved many challenges and met with mixed success. However, Technocean continued to refine the SVP-B to enhance performance and flexibility in manufacturing (and reduce cost). This report discusses recent developments as well as performance of the Technocean SVP-B buoy.
