Further Refinements in the Use of Iridium for Polar Applications
David Meldrum, Duncan Mercer (Scottish Association for Marine Science)

ABSTRACT:

Iridium is one of the very few polar-capable satellite communication systems, and alongside Argos has become a mainstay of the polar research programme at SAMS. Compared to Argos it offers much higher bandwidth, continuous coverage, and a real-time 2-way capability. However, Argos has retained an important place in our work through the ability of CLS to ensure GTS insertion of key environmental parameters. In this paper, we present data from our latest deployments north of Greenland, and detail some ongoing developments in real-time web data publication.
